RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A solitary plasmacytoma is classified into a solitary plasmacytoma of the bone (SBP) and a solitary extramedullary (soft tissue mass) plasmacytoma, based on the site of the lesion. Despite the high local control rate with radiotherapy, approximately half of patients' conditions progress to multiple myeloma (MM) within 3-5 years after diagnosis, with SBP having a worse prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively assessed the treatment and outcomes of patients with SBP in a hospital in China from 2008 to 2021. Twenty-four patients treated over 13 years with SBP were enrolled in this retrospective study. RESULTS: The most common sites for SBP were the axial skeleton and femur. The M protein was detected in 11 patients (46 %), of which 8 (33 %) had light chains, 2 (8 %) had immunoglobulin G kappa and 1 (4 %) had immunoglobulin D kappa. Flow cytometry revealed that 5 patients (21 %) had minimal bone marrow involvement. The treatment included chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy in 18 (75 %), 12 (50 %), and 9 (38 %) patients, respectively, of whom 13 (54 %) received combined treatment. Over a median follow-up period of 67.2 months, 9 patients (38 %) developed MM in a median time of 101.5 months. The 5- and 10-year progression-free survival rates were 67.3 % and 37.4 %, respectively. One patient died due to pneumonia without progression and the other died due to relapse. CONCLUSION: This study confirmed the high rate of progression of SBP to MM, indicating a need for adjunct chemotherapy for the management of SBP.

RESUMO

Over the past few years, a large number of studies have evidenced increased signal intensity in the deep brain nuclei on unenhanced T1-MRI images achieved by the application of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs). The deposition of gadolinium in the brain, bone, and other tissues following administration of GBCAs has also been confirmed in histological studies in rodents and in necropsy studies in adults and children. Given the distinct physiological characteristics of children, this review focuses on examining the current research on gadolinium deposition in children, particularly studies utilizing novel methods and technologies. Furthermore, the article compares safety research findings of linear GBCAs and macrocyclic GBCAs in children, with the aim of offering clinicians practical guidance based on the most recent research outcomes. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 5 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

RESUMO

Scorpio, a commonly used animal medicine in China, is derived from Buthus martensii as recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. China harbors rich species of Scorpionida and adulterants exist in the raw medicinal material and deep-processed products of Scorpio. The microscopic characteristics of the deep-processed products may be incomplete or lost during processing, which makes the identification difficult. In this study, the maximum likelihood(ML) tree was constructed based on the morphology and cytochrome C oxidase subunit I(COⅠ) to identify the species of Scorpio products. The results showed that the main adulterant of Scorpio was Lychas mucronatus. According to the specific SNP sites in the COⅠ sequence of B. martensii, the stable primers were designed for the identification of the medicinal material and formula granules of Scorpio. The polymerase chain reaction(PCR) at the annealing temperature of 61 ℃ and 30 cycles produced bright specific bands at about 150 bp for both B. martensii and its formula particles and no band for adulterants. The adaptability of the method was investigated, which showed that the bands at about 150 bp were produced for Scorpio medicinal material, lyophilized powder, and formula granules, and commercially available formula granules. The results showed that the established method could be used to identify the adulterants of Scorpio and its formula granules, which could help to improve the quality control system and ensure the safe clinical application of Scorpio formula granules.

RESUMO

Osteoporosis is particularly prevalent among postmenopausal women and the elderly. In the present study, we investigated the effect of the novel small molecule E0924G (N-(4-methoxy-pyridine-2-yl)-5-methylfuran-2-formamide) on osteoporosis. E0924G significantly increased the protein expression levels of osteoprotegerin (OPG) and runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), and thus significantly promoted osteogenesis in MC3T3-E1 cells. E0924G also significantly decreased osteoclast differentiation and inhibited bone resorption and F-actin ring formation in receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclasts from RAW264.7 macrophages. Importantly, oral administration of E0924G in both ovariectomized (OVX) rats and SAMP6 senile mice significantly increased bone mineral density and decreased bone loss compared to OVX controls or SAMR1 mice. Further mechanistic studies showed that E0924G could bind to and then activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta (PPARδ), and the pro-osteoblast effect and the inhibition of osteoclast differentiation induced by E0924G were significantly abolished when PPARδ was knocked down or inhibited. In conclusion, these data strongly suggest that E0924G has the potential to prevent OVX-induced and age-related osteoporosis by dual regulation of bone formation and bone resorption through activation of the PPARδ signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is a destructive insect pest of many crops. Rickettsia infection in different cryptic species of B. tabaci has been observed worldwide. Understanding the interactions between these 2 organisms is critical to developing Rickettsia-based strategies to control B. tabaci and thereby reduce the transmission of related vector-borne viruses. In this study, we investigated the effects of Rickettsia infection on the biological characteristics of the Middle East Asia Minor 1 (MEAM1) strain of B. tabaci through biological analysis of infected and uninfected individuals. The results of this study suggest that Rickettsia may confer fitness benefits. These benefits include increased fertility, improved survival rates, accelerated development, and resulted in female bias. We also investigated the transcriptomics impact of Rickettsia infection on B. tabaci by performing a comparative RNA-seq analysis of nymphs and adult females, both with and without the infection. Our analysis revealed 218 significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in infected nymphs compared to uninfected ones and 748 significant DEGs in infected female adults compared to their uninfected whiteflies. Pathway analysis further revealed that Rickettsia can affect many important metabolic pathways in whiteflies. The results suggest that Rickettsia plays an essential role in energy metabolism, and nutrient synthesis in the B. tabaci MEAM1, and depends on metabolites obtained from the host to ensure its survival. Overall, our findings suggest that Rickettsia has beneficial effects on B. tabaci and offered insights into the potential molecular mechanisms governing the interactions between Rickettsia and B. tabaci MEAM1.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer has a low 5-year survival rate and high mortality. Human ß-defensin-1 (hBD-1) may play an integral function in the innate immune system, contributing to the recognition and destruction of cancer cells. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in the process of cell differentiation and growth. AIM: To investigate the effect of hBD-1 on the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway and autophagy in human colon cancer SW620 cells. METHODS: CCK8 assay was utilized for the detection of cell proliferation and determination of the optimal drug concentration. Colony formation assay was employed to assess the effect of hBD-1 on SW620 cell proliferation. Bioinformatics was used to screen potentially biologically significant lncRNAs related to the mTOR pathway. Additionally, p-mTOR (Ser2448), Beclin1, and LC3II/I expression levels in SW620 cells were assessed through Western blot analysis. RESULTS: hBD-1 inhibited the proliferative ability of SW620 cells, as evidenced by the reduction in the colony formation capacity of SW620 cells upon exposure to hBD-1. hBD-1 decreased the expression of p-mTOR (Ser2448) protein and increased the expression of Beclin1 and LC3II/I protein. Furthermore, bioinformatics analysis identified seven lncRNAs (2 upregulated and 5 downregulated) related to the mTOR pathway. The lncRNA TCONS_00014506 was ultimately selected. Following the inhibition of the lncRNA TCONS_00014506, exposure to hBD-1 inhibited p-mTOR (Ser2448) and promoted Beclin1 and LC3II/I protein expression. CONCLUSION: hBD-1 inhibits the mTOR pathway and promotes autophagy by upregulating the expression of the lncRNA TCONS_00014506 in SW620 cells.

RESUMO

The effects of different contents of e-waste alloy on the microstructure and joint properties of Cu90PSn brazing filler metal was investigated during copper and copper brazing. Microstructure of base metal and brazing filler metal was studied with scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The properties of brazing joint obtained by adding different electronic waste filler metal for smelting copper alloy were compared together. The results indicated that the fluidity of Cu90PSn brazing filler metal was weakened and the spreading property of Cu90PSn brazing filler metal was damaged after the addition of e-waste copper alloy. The structure of Cu90PSn brazing filler metal is mainly composed of (Cu), Cu3P and (Cu,Sn) compounds. When a small amount of electronic waste copper alloy is added, a trace amount of Fe in the brazing filler metal is distributed in the matrix structure of the filler metal in the form of solid solution. With the increase of copper alloys contents by smelting e-waste, Fe content in Cu90PSn brazing filler metal increases; the granular Fe3P phosphide changes into lamellar form. The Cu3P compound phase changes from continuous large orderly arrangement to discontinuous small block structure. Therefore, adding a trace amount of electronic waste copper alloy to the solder induction brazing copper/copper can obtain a uniform composition of the brazing structure. And the welding performance is not affected. However, As the content of e-waste smelted copper alloy continues to increase, the tensile strength shows a downward trend, which is attributed to the presence of brittle compound Fe3P in the joint.

RESUMO

Introduction: The global headlines have been dominated by the sudden and widespread outbreak of monkeypox, a rare and endemic zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). Genomic composition based machine learning (ML) methods have recently shown promise in identifying host adaptability and evolutionary patterns of virus. Our study aimed to analyze the genomic characteristics and evolutionary patterns of MPXV using ML methods. Methods: The open reading frame (ORF) regions of full-length MPXV genomes were filtered and 165 ORFs were selected as clusters with the highest homology. Unsupervised machine learning methods of t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and hierarchical clustering were performed to observe the DCR characteristics of the selected ORF clusters. Results: The results showed that MPXV sequences post-2022 showed an obvious linear adaptive evolution, indicating that it has become more adapted to the human host after accumulating mutations. For further accurate analysis, the ORF regions with larger variations were filtered out based on the ranking of homology difference to narrow down the key ORF clusters, which drew the same conclusion of linear adaptability. Then key differential protein structures were predicted by AlphaFold 2, which meant that difference in main domains might be one of the internal reasons for linear adaptive evolution. Discussion: Understanding the process of linear adaptation is critical in the constant evolutionary struggle between viruses and their hosts, playing a significant role in crafting effective measures to tackle viral diseases. Therefore, the present study provides valuable insights into the evolutionary patterns of the MPXV in 2022 from the perspective of genomic composition characteristics analysis through ML methods.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Central sterile supply departments (CSSDs) play a vital role in hospital infection control. We investigate the factors associated with wet pack occurrence after steam sterilization. MATERIAL AND METHODS We designed a log sheet to record information concerning sterilized packs. The data included the type of sterilized pack; outside weather (sunny, overcast, or rainy); the item in the sterilized pack; packaging material; whether the item had been packaged in compliance with guidelines; whether the pack had been laid flat, upright, or leaning at an acute angle; which sterilizer was used for sterilization of the pack; whether the pack had been placed on the top or bottom shelf inside the sterilizer chamber; whether the pack had been loaded in compliance with guidelines; the drying time following sterilization; and cooling time after sterilization. The sterilized packs in our study were selected from all of the packs that were sterilized in the CSSD of the authors' institution during June to December 2021. RESULTS Factors associated with wet pack occurrence after steam sterilization include: outside weather on the day of sterilization; the item in the sterilized pack; packaging material; whether the item had been packaged in compliance with guidelines; whether the pack had been placed on the top or bottom shelf; and cooling time after sterilization. Statistically significant differences (P<0.05) in wet pack incidence were identified for all of these factors. CONCLUSIONS Various factors are associated with wet pack occurrence after steam sterilization. Recommendations for reducing the risk of wet packs include regular maintenance of the steam pipeline, regular replacement of thermal insulation materials for the steam pipeline, and extension of the drying time.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Phillyrin, the major lignin compound of Forsythia suspense (Thunb.) Vahl, has been shown the effects of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Our study was aimed to explore the protective effect of phillyrin on glomerular mesangial cells (HBZY-1) and the potential mechanism. METHODS: Cell viability, cytokine production, levels of reactive oxygen radicals (ROS), glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as autophagy and apoptosis levels were determined to verify the mechanism of phillyrin on HBZY-1 cells. RESULTS: Our result indicated that phillyrin significantly inhibited HG-induced HBZY-1 proliferation by inhibiting Bcl-2 expression and upregulating Bad, cleaved caspase-3, and -9 expression. Also, phillyrin suppressed HG-induced mesangial extracellular matrix accumulation by inhibiting the expression of fibronectin and transforming growth factor-ß1. Further, phillyrin inhibited oxidative stress and inflammation by decreasing ROS, MDA, TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 contents and increasing SOD and GSH expression. Phillyrin also promoted autophagy by increasing LC3-II/LC3-I ratio and down-regulating p62 expression. Furthermore, WB assay showed that phillyrin inhibited oxidative stress caused by HG via activating Nrf2 signaling pathway, while attenuated proliferation and inflammation in HBZY-1 cells through inactivating PI3K/Akt/mTOR and NF-κB pathways. CONCLUSION: All results showed that phillyrin might be a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of DN.

RESUMO

Multiple myeloma (MM) significantly increases the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) within 6 months of treatment initiation. The IMPEDE VTE score is a VTE risk prediction model which is recently incorporated into the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, but it lacks validation among Asians, including Chinese MM patients. We performed a retrospective chart review of 405 Chinese with newly diagnosed MM who started therapy at Beijing Jishuitan Hospital between April 2013 to October 2022. The 6-month cumulative incidence of VTE was 3.8 % (95 % CI:1.6-7.6), 8.6 % (95 % CI: 5.3-21.9) and 40.5 % (95 % CI: 24.9-55.7) in the low-, intermediate- and high-risk groups (P < 0.001), respectively. The C-statistic of the IMPEDE VTE scores for predicting VTE within 6 months of treatment initiation was 0.74 (95 % CI: 0.65-0.83). Of note, in this single-center cohort study, we propose that the anticoagulant LMWH may be more effective than the antiplatelet aspirin in potentially preventing VTE in newly diagnosed MM patients. Our findings suggest that the IMPEDE VTE score is a valid evidence-based risk stratification tool in Chinese patients with newly diagnosed MM.

RESUMO

Spatial prediction tasks are challenging when observed samples are sparse and prediction samples are abundant. Gaussian processes (GPs) are commonly used in spatial prediction tasks and have the advantage of measuring the uncertainty of the interpolation result. However, as the sample size increases, GPs suffer from significant overhead. Standard neural networks (NNs) provide a powerful and scalable solution for modeling spatial data, but they often overfit small sample data. Based on conditional neural processes (CNPs), which combine the advantages of GPs and NNs, we propose a new framework called Spatial Multi-Attention Conditional Neural Processes (SMACNPs) for spatial small sample prediction tasks. SMACNPs are a modular model that can predict targets by employing different attention mechanisms to extract relevant information from different forms of sample data. The task representation is inferred by measuring the spatial correlation contained in different sample points and the relationship contained in attribute variables, respectively. The distribution of the target variable is predicted by GPs parameterized by NNs. SMACNPs allow us to obtain accurate predictions of the target value while quantifying the prediction uncertainty. Experiments on spatial prediction tasks on simulated and real-world datasets demonstrate that this framework flexibly incorporates spatial context and correlation into the model, achieving state-of-the-art results in spatial small sample prediction tasks in terms of both predictive performance and reliability. For example, on the California housing dataset, our method reduces MAE by 8% and MSE by 7% compared to the second-best method. In addition, a spatiotemporal prediction task to forecast traffic speed further confirms the effectiveness and generality of our method.

RESUMO

Heart failure (HF) has been recognized as a global epidemic with high rates of morbidity, hospitalization, and mortality. The role of amino acids, which provide the body with energy, in the development of HF is still unclear. The aim of this study was to explore changes in serum amino acids in patients with HF and identify potential biomarkers. First, the serum amino acid metabolism profiles of 44 patients with HF and 30 healthy controls (Con) were quantitatively measured. Then, candidate markers were identified through the utilization of T test, multivariate statistical analysis, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The results found that there were 11 amino acid levels that were significantly different between patients with HF and Con. Based on ROC curve analysis, the biomarkers of eight amino acids (Glutamic acid, Taurine, L-aspartic acid, L-ornithine, Ethanolamine, L-Serine, L-Sarcosine, and Cysteine) showed high sensitivity and specificity (AUC > 0.90), and binary logistic regression analysis was used in MetaboAnalyst 5.0. Among the amino acids examined, six exhibited notable alterations in accordance with the severity of HF. In conclusion, this study cannot only provide clinicians with an objective diagnostic approach for the early identification of HF, but also enhances comprehension of the underlying mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of HF.

RESUMO

East Yunnan province in southwest China is a region with elevated natural abundance (high geological background levels) of Cd due to high metal (loid) contents in the soils. Enzyme activities are useful indicators of metal (loid) toxicity in contaminated soils and whether Cd inhibits enzyme activities in paddy soils in high geological background areas is of considerable public concern. A pot experiment combined with field investigation was conducted to assess the effects of Cd on six soil enzymes that are essential to the cycling of C, N, and P in soils. Inhibitory effects of Cd fractions on enzyme activities were assessed using ecological dose-response models. The impact of soil properties on the inhibition of sensitive soil enzymes by Cd were assessed using linear and structural equation models. Cadmium was enriched in the paddy soils with 72.2 % of soil samples from high geological background areas exceeding the Chinese threshold values (GB 15618-2018) of Cd. Enzyme responses to Cd contamination varied markedly with a negative response by catalase but a positive response by invertase. Urease, ß-glucosidase, and alkaline phosphatase activities were stimulated at low Cd concentrations and inhibited at high concentrations. The average inhibition ratios of ß-glucosidase, urease, and catalase in high Cd levels were 19.9, 38.9, and 51.9%, respectively. Ecological dose-response models indicate that catalase and urease were the most Cd-sensitive of the enzymes studied and were suitable indicators of soil quality in high geological background areas. Structural equation modeling (SEM) indicates that soil properties influenced sensitive enzymes through various pathways, indicating that soil properties were factors determining Cd inhibition of enzyme activities. This suggests that Cd concentrations and soil physicochemical properties under a range of environmental conditions should be considered in addressing soil Cd pollution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: TFP5 is a Cdk5 inhibitor peptide, which could restore insulin production. However, the role of TFP5 in diabetic nephropathy (DN) is still unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize the transcriptome profiles of mRNA and lncRNA in TFP5-treated DN mice to mine key lncRNAs associated with TFP5 efficacy. METHODS: We evaluated the role of TFP5 in DN pathology and performed RNA sequencing in C57BL/6J control mice, C57BL/6J db/db model mice, and TFP5 treatment C57BL/6J db/db model mice. The differentially expressed lncRNAs (DElncRNAs) and mRNAs (DEmRNAs) were analyzed. WGCNA was used to screen hub-gene of TFP5 in treatment of DN. RESULTS: Our results showed that TFP5 therapy ameliorated renal tubular injury in DN mice. In addition, compared with the control group, the expression profile of lncRNAs in the model group was significantly disordered, while TFP5 alleviated the abnormal expression of lncRNAs. A total of 67 DElncRNAs shared among the three groups, 39 DElncRNAs showed a trend of increasing in the DN group and decreasing after TFP treatment, while the remaining 28 showed the opposite trend. DElncRNAs were enriched in glycosphingolipid biosynthesis signaling pathways, NF-κB signaling pathways, and complement activation signaling pathways. There were 1028 up-regulated and 1117 down-regulated DEmRNAs in the model group compared to control group, and 123 up-regulated and 153 down-regulated DEmRNAs in the TFP5 group compared to the model group. The DEmRNAs were involved in PPAR and MAPK signaling pathway. We confirmed that MSTRG.28304.1 is a key DElncRNA for TFP5 treatment of DN. TFP5 ameliorated DN maybe by inhibiting MSTRG.28304.1 through regulating the insulin resistance and PPAR signaling pathway. The qRT-PCR results confirmed the reliability of the sequencing data through verifying the expression of ENSMUST00000211209, MSTRG.31814.5, MSTRG.28304.1, and MSTRG.45642.14. CONCLUSION: Overall, the present study provides novel insights into molecular mechanisms of TFP5 treatment in DN.

RESUMO

The Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), is the key vector insect transmitting the Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) bacterium that causes the devastating citrus greening disease (Huanglongbing, HLB) worldwide. The D. citri salivary glands (SG) exhibit an important barrier against the transmission of HLB pathogen. However, knowledge on the molecular mechanism of SG defence against CLas infection is still limited. In the present study, we compared the SG transcriptomic response of CLas-free and CLas-infected D. citri using an illumine paired-end RNA sequencing. In total of 861 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the SG upon CLas infection, including 202 upregulated DEGs and 659 downregulated DEGs were identified. Functional annotation analysis showed that most of the DEGs were associated with cellular processes, metabolic processes, and the immune response. Gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses revealed that these DEGs were enriched in pathways involving carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, the immune system, the digestive system, the lysosome, and endocytosis. A total of 16 DEGs were randomly selected to further validate the accuracy of RNA-Seq dataset by reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction. This study provides substantial transcriptomic information regarding the SG of D. citri in response to CLas infection, which may shed light on the molecular interaction between D. citri and CLas, and provides new ideas for the prevention and control of citrus psyllid.

RESUMO

A farmland area in Zhaotong City was taken as the research object, and the method of point-to-point collaborative sampling was used to collect farmland soil and vegetables in Zhaotong and test the content of six heavy metals, namely As, Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Cr. The geo-accumulation index and potential ecological risk index were used to evaluate the heavy metal pollution of soil. The health risk model was used to evaluate the risk to the human body imposed by vegetables. The results showed that Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, and Cr pollution existed in the research area. Compared with the risk screening value of farmland, the over-standard rates were 34.35%, 6.87%, 2.29%, 80.15%, and 6.11%, respectively; Pb, Cd, and Cr were found in vegetables. Compared with the pollutant limit in food, the over-standard rates were 6.87%, 15.27%, and 36.64%, respectively. According to the soil pollution evaluation, Cd in the soil showed a strong ecological risk, and other heavy metals in the soil showed a mild ecological risk. The human health risk evaluation model showed that both non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk were out of the acceptable range and had a greater influence on children. Correlation analysis showed that As in the soil had an antagonistic effect on Cu and Zn absorption by vegetables, whereas Cr in the soil could promote Cu and Zn absorption by vegetables.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Intestinal malrotation is an infrequent congenital anomaly primarily observed in neonates, and adult-onset cases are exceedingly rare. Studies on adult congenital intestinal malrotation are limited. METHODS: A case with congenital intestinal malrotation is reported in our study. The clinical data were collected and the treatment process and effect were evaluated. RESULTS: A 45-year-old female who had been experiencing vomiting for over 40 years was admitted to our hospital. According to the result of CT scan, intestinal volvulus accompanied by bowel obstruction was suspected. Then laparoscopic examination was applied to the patient and was ultimately diagnosed with adult congenital intestinal malrotation. We performed Ladd's procedure combined with gastrojejunostomy and Braun anastomosis. The patient recovered well and was successfully discharged from the hospital on the 13th day after surgery. After a 6-month follow-up, the symptom of vomiting was significantly alleviated and body weight was gained for 10 kg. She was very satisfied with the treatment. CONCLUSION: Adult congenital intestinal malrotation is a rare disease that is often misdiagnosed owing to nonspecific clinical manifestations. Therefore, awareness about this condition should be enhanced. Surgery remains the cornerstone of treatment for this disease. Combining gastrojejunostomy and Braun anastomosis with the traditional Ladd procedure can optimize surgical outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sclerotherapy is purportedly less effective in patients with hemorrhagic than with non-hemorrhagic lymphatic malformations (LMs). We aimed to compare the efficacy of bleomycin-lauromacrogol foam (BLF) sclerotherapy in the treatment of macrocystic LMs with and without intralesional hemorrhage. METHODS: Fifty-five children with macrocystic LMs admitted to the Pediatric Surgery Department were retrospectively included. The patients were allocated into a hemorrhage group (23 cases) or a non-hemorrhage group (32 cases) based on the occurrence of an intracapsular hemorrhage. The diagnosis was confirmed by physical examination, color ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and puncture findings. BLF was injected into the capsule after draining the cystic fluid under color ultrasound guidance. Patients whose lesions were unchanged or showed minor change after 1 month were treated again using the same method. Changes in lesion size and the number of treatments were recorded. Effectiveness was classified as excellent (volume reduction ≥90%), good (50%≤volume reduction<90%), or poor (volume reduction <50%). RESULTS: In the hemorrhage group, 17, 6, and 0 patients' outcomes were classified as excellent, good, and poor, respectively. The overall efficacy rate was 100%. In the non-hemorrhage group, 23, 7, and 2 patients' outcomes were classified as excellent, good, and poor, respectively. The overall efficacy rate was 93.8%. There was no significant difference in efficacy rate between groups (P = 0.767). CONCLUSIONS: BLF is an effective and safe treatment for macrocystic LMs with bleeding. The results were similar in patients with and without bleeding. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Treatment, Level III.

RESUMO

Wood vinegar is a high-value acidic byproduct of biomass pyrolysis used for charcoal production. It is widely used in agriculture and forestry. The adverse effects of synthetic fungicides on the environment and human health have prompted the increasing use of biofungicides as alternatives to traditional products in integrated plant disease management programs. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the potential of wood vinegar as a disease management tool in agriculture and forestry. In this paper, the composition and preparation process of wood vinegar and its application in agriculture and forestry were introduced, and the effect and mechanism of wood vinegar against fungi, viruses and bacteria were summarized. The potential of wood vinegar as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional chemical fungicides is also discussed. Finally, some suggestions on the application and development of wood vinegar were put forward.
